This year, I'm helping to raise funds for the GREAT STRIDES walk at the 2012 Chicago - Arvey Field in Grant Park walk on 06/02/2012. My coworker has a 3-year-old son named Brady born with Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a devastating genetic disease that affects the lungs and pancreas of children and young adults. The defective gene substantially impairs normal respiratory and digestive functions, making the simple acts of eating and breathing a challenge. Many CF patients have lung transplants at early ages because of the damage caused by CF.

Advances continue to be made in finding a cure and therapies have been developed that have made a significant difference in treating the symptoms of CF, but it’s not enough. For the first time in the Foundation’s history scientific opportunities are coming at a pace that is exceeding its ability to fund them. The Groundhog Day Guide To Life, Love, Happiness, and Living In The Now

The Wisdom of Groundhog Day

Stage 1 – Attitude Is Everything:

The beginning of the movie starts by highlighting Phil’s pessimistic attitude towards everything. On the first day of covering the groundhog story, the producer asks him why he was late to the set, she mentions that he we was missing all the fun.

Remember that the best things in life are free, it’s all about the simple things. Never forget to dance and laugh. A pessimistic attitude will close you off to life and all it’s glory. Learn to be open and playful. Life really isn’t that serious.

Stage 2 – Wake Up This Is Not a Movie

After waking up on the same day at exactly 6 am, Phil finally realizes that he is not crazy, that he really is living the same day over and over again.

This is your first step in awakening and living a conscious life. You first need to realize you are asleep before you can begin to do anything about it. You need to deeply “see” that this is not just a movie, this is real life. Deeply inquire into your life, you will see that you are basically living the same day every day.

Live Your Life Change Your Life

One of the important lessons that Phil learns early on, is that once you begin to awaken and take control of your life, people will no longer be able relate to you. People can only understand according to their own level, and not to the actual meaning of things. So if you start awakening to your life, how can someone understand you when they are asleep?

Stage 3- Living for Today

When it deeply hits Phil that this is his reality, he begins to contemplate what it all means, what does he do now?

Don’t escape, take responsibility. Being responsible means you respond to life with all the intelligence you have. Escaping is reacting to life. When you respond you are in control, when you react you are in the control of external influences.

What if there was no tomorrow?

Phil then goes on to ask, “What if there was no tomorrow?”. His drinking buddies say, “well that means there would be no consequences, no hangovers, we could do whatever we wanted.”

Take the time to see how many things in your life you accept just because they tell you it is so, that you don’t even question whether it has any basis of truth? Whats the higher agenda behind it?

There Really Is No Tomorrow

Let me ask you an important question, when have you ever been out of this moment? The only thing that never changes is your witnessing presence, it has always been in the here and now. But how much of your attention is actually focused on it in your day to day life?

Here is one of the main lessons: there really is no tomorrow, this is a concept that only exists in our minds. We experience life by observing how our future is instantaneously turning into the past.

Groundhog’s New Message To Living In The Now

Every day is groundhog day.  Just like Phil’s it is essentially the same, but if you bring enough awareness to it, learn from it, the next day(moment in time) can be a little better. As you grow in your understanding of yourself and the world you are able to handle the same life situations better.

The more you understand yourself, the more control you have of your life. You discover the courage to let go of the past and give your full attention to the now.

The Ultimate Message Is This

Being solely identified with your mind and thoughts, you live an egocentric life, your life is just on the periphery, very superficial. The moment you realize that this is what stands in your way of growth and fulfillment, you begin the process of your inner journey. You start asking your self what is mind? What is thought? Who am I? What am I ?

You start to learn to observe and learn from your self and the world. You learn to use your mind when it’s needed and put it aside when it’s not.

Eventually being in the service of others will give your life meaning, and love will keep you in the now, because when you truly love you are not identified and dominated by your ego.
